An overcrowded capital
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the second largest city in the world, with more than 36.6 million inhabitants (source: UN, 2025). As the country’s main economic hub, the city attracts around 2,000 migrants from rural areas every day, who come in search of employment opportunities. This large-scale rural to urban migration is one of the main drivers of Dhaka’s rapid and largely unplanned growth.
Upon arrival, the poorest among them have no choice but to settle in slums. The city alone is home to more than 6 million people living in over 5,000 slums that are not connected to the city’s water network. Only around 38 per cent of Dhaka’s population has access to a wastewater sanitation system.
Better with water inaugurated its first water network in Bangladesh in the Bhashantek neighbourhood in 2012. Since then, it has expanded its operations to the Duaripara slum.
