Metro Cebu
#betterwithwater in the philippines
the situation in Metro Cebu
Located in the heart of Cebu Province in the Central Visayas region, Metro Cebu is the Philippines’ second-largest economic, financial and industrial hub after Metro Manila. The metropolitan area brings together several highly urbanized cities, including Cebu City, the regional capital, and Mandaue, a major industrial center.
Since the 1980s, rapid economic growth has been accompanied by sustained urbanization. Constrained by mountainous terrain and high exposure to natural hazards, urban development has expanded mainly along the coastline, giving rise to the present-day Metro Cebu metropolitan area.
Population Growth Under Pressure
Metro Cebu’s population has grown from 1.5 million in 1990 to 2.9 million in 2017 and is projected to reach nearly 3.8 million by 2030. While this growth has fueled economic development, it has also widened social inequalities and placed increasing pressure on infrastructure and essential services, particularly access to safe drinking water. In the most disadvantaged communities, households once spent more than 25% of their family income on water..
Better with water has been working across Metro Cebu since 2009. Today, the organization supports the communities of Inayawan, Subangdaku, Tangke, Tangke II, Tipolo, Malibu, Paknaan, Paknaan Transmission, Mantuyong Ceniza and Mantuyong Guizo, providing sustainable household access to safe drinking water and improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable populations.
