the situation in Cebu
Cebu City is the regional, financial, and administrative capital of the Central Visayas region. With a population of 922,000 people, it is the fifth most populous city in the Philippines, and it is considered the second largest growth area in the Philippines after Manila.
It experienced the fastest economic growth in the Philippines during the 1980s, which led to an increase in population and expansion of the city. Cebu stretches along the coastline due to its mountainous topography and high vulnerability risks, which limit the allocation of viable land for urban expansion, and has become the Cebu metropolitan area (Metro Cebu).
A population growth under pressure.
The population grew from 1.5 million in 1990 to 2.9 million in 2017. By 2030, the population of Metro Cebu is expected to reach 3.8 million people. For those living in disadvantaged areas of Cebu, the cost of water was prohibitive, accounting for more than 25% of the household budget before our intervention.
Better with water has been operating in Cebu since 2014 and is now active in Inayawan, San Roque, Tangke, and Tangke II.
