the situation in Dhaka
An overcrowded capital
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the 9th largest city in the world, with over 21 million inhabitants. As the country’s economic center, Dhaka attracts most rural migrants seeking employment in the capital. Rural-to-urban migration is one of the main factors contributing to the rapid and unplanned growth of Dhaka.
Upon arrival, the poorest of them have no choice but to settle in slums. The city is home to about 4 million people living in nearly 5,000 slums that are not covered by the city’s water network. Only about 38% of Dhaka’s population is served by a sewage treatment system.
Better with water inaugurated its first water network in Bangladesh in the Bhashantek neighbourhood in 2012. Since then, it has expanded its operations to the Duaripara slum.
